Earth Conscious Optics (Eco)
Modo is thrilled to introduce Eco, the first eyewear collection made of recycled acetate and stainless steel. The collection achieves an innovative, environmentally sound product with no compromise in the quality, style, or durability of the frame.
Alessandro Lanaro, founder and CEO of Modo, was born in Cortina d’Ampezzo in the heart of the Dolomites of Northern Italy—recently recognized as a “Natural World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.
Alessandro moved to New York in 1990 and founded Modo. In 2008, he committed to changing the eyewear industry by thinking of business in a new way: creating a necessary product in a responsible and sustainable manner. As a result, Eco was born: combining the concept of “made from recycled content” with powerful initiatives such as planting a tree for every product sold, and finding an easy way to allow customers to donate their unwanted frames to those in need.
“Hundreds of millions of people around the world use corrective eyewear. This is a huge opportunity to make a difference,” says Alessandro. “The power lies with the retailers to make sustainability attainable for all and that means offering a desirable, quality collection at a fair price. For this reason, we see the purchase of Eco eyewear as participation to a social movement.”
With Eco, we have reinvented the entire product lifecycle from an eco-friendly perspective. We are confident our collection will shape the future of eyewear.
Eco is the first consumer brand and eyewear collection to receive an Environmental Claims Validation from UL Environment (a leading agency for environmental claims certifications) for its 95% recycled content. Both our optical and sun frames have this distinction. Together with nonprofit organizations, Modo plants one tree for every frame sold. We focus on restoring trees in degraded lands, and we show communities in developing countries how to improve their rural livelihoods through the introduction of environmentally sustainable projects.
Eco also makes it easy for customers to donate their unwanted eyewear to people in need throughout the world. Simply send the recyclable Eco eyewear box to our donation site (envelope provided). Even our packaging uses eco-conscious materials such as organic cotton, recycled paper, and cardboard.
Eco glasses are a must for many celebrities. During the past few months, showbiz celebrities including actors, singers, and fashion stylists have been seen wearing Eco glasses. Actor and environmentalist Leonardo Di Caprio has been spotted at the Eco Greenwich Village Boutique in New York. (Check out his favorite Eco styles: 1075 GRYST & 108 TORT.)
